International saxophone contest

SAXPERIENCE COMPETITION

Article 1

Saxperience Competition is an international music event bringing together professional saxophone players, students, teachers, and fans.

Article 2

The founder and organizer of the Competition is Serbian Saxophone Society (hereinafter “the Organizer”)

Article 3

The competition is public and regulated by the competition requirements and rules and regulations determined by the Organizer. The requirements regulate the competition categories, while the rules regulate the competition elements.

Article 4

The competition is held in Belgrade, Serbia, every December.

Article 5

The Organizer:

  • Sets the competition date and determines the place
  • Sets the competition requirements, rules and regulations, and judging rules
  • Sets application fees
  • Appoints the Competition Director and the Jury Secretary

Article 6

APPLICATIONS

Application deadline: December 5, 2024.

Applications should be e-mailed to competition@saxperience.rs or can be completed online at www.saxperience.rs

The right to compete is granted to all candidates who have submitted complete applications and who meet the competition propositions and follow the rules and regulations.

Every candidate needs to submit their application by the deadline set by the Organizer, along with the proof of application fee payment and scans of either the birth certificate (for Serbian nationals) or the first page of their passport (for foreign nationals).

Serbian nationals pay the application fee in Serbian dinars, as determined by the propositions.

Foreign national pay the registration fee in euros, as it is determined by the propositions.

To be considered complete, each application should comprise the following information:

  • Applicant’s full name
  • Date of birth
  • Email address
  • Phone number
  • The category they are competing in
  • School name and place
  • Name of teacher/mentor
  • Name of accompanist (or official accompanist)
  • Competition program with the duration
  • Signed consent that photos, videos and competition results may be made public

Article 7

Judging

The judges are selected by the Organizer. The Jury comprises the Jury President, the Jury Secretary, and the judges chosen from the ranks of the teachers whose students are competing, each in their own category.

Jury membership is voluntary/unpaid.

The Jury President and Jury Secretary are appointed by the Organizer.

The Organizer will award each judge with a Certificate of Participation in Jury Work.

The responsibilities and work of the Jury are more closely described in the Judging Rules.

Article 8

Prizes

Based on the score, the following prizes are awarded:

First prize: 95-100 points

Second prize: 90-94.99 points

Third prize: 80-89.99 points

Honorable mention: 60-79.99 points

 

Article 9

PRIZE FUND

The winner of each category will be awarded a cash prize in the value determined by the Organizer if he/she had been given 95 points or more.

The best-placed competitor in the thirteenth category, if he/she wins 100 points, the Organizer guarantees a performance at the Belgrade Saxperience festival in the following calendar year.

 

Article 10

The responsibilities of the Organizer:

  • The Organizer will check all submitted applications for irregularities, and in case any are found, will notify the submitters of such applications and request changes.
  • The Organizer will ensure that the contestants have space and time for warm-ups before the competition.
  • The Organizer will provide each contestant with a Certificate of Participation.

Article 11

The responsibilities of the contestants:

  • The contestants will cover their own travel and accommodation expenses, as well as the costs and expenses of their accompanists.
  • The contestants will abide by the rules and regulations set herein.

Article 12

The Organizer is not responsible for any injuries incurred or any damages done to musical instruments and/or other equipment the contestants are handling during the competition.

Article 13

The competition goals:

  • to prepare students for important solo public performances;
  • to improve the quality of musical interpretations through the exchange of experiences between foreign and local teachers;
  • to improve saxophone studies (in Serbia) with the introduction of master classes;
  • to encourage and improve the competitive spirit among the contestants;
  • to promote and popularize classical saxophone and music written for classical saxophone;
  • to encourage partnerships and collaborations between local and international saxophone players;
  • to enable young local saxophonists to perform before international teachers;
  • to promote the work of Serbian composers and encourage them to continue writing new scores for saxophone.

Article 14

The Organizer reserves the right to record, reproduce, and broadcast the program, while the contestants are not entitled to compensation for the audio and video recordings of their performances.

Article 15

The application fee will not be refunded should the applicant decide to withdraw from the contest.

Article 16

The Organizers reserves the right to make any changes to the program, as well as rules and regulations, should it be necessary.

Article 17

By sending the application, the candidate/the candidate’s legal guardian accepts and agrees to all of the rules and regulations stipulated within this Document. In case of any disputes, the Court in Belgrade will adjudicate on the matter, referring to this Document in its original form, in the Serbian language.

Judging rules

Article 1

This document serves to more closely define the responsibilities and functioning of the competition jury.

Article 2

The judges are selected by the Organizer. The jury comprises the Jury President, the Jury Secretary, and the judges chosen from the ranks of the teachers whose students are competing in the contest.

Jury membership is voluntary/unpaid.

The Jury President is appointed by the Organizer. In case the competition lasts for more than one day, it is possible to elect a different president for each day.

The Jury Secretary is appointed by the Organizer.

Article 3

The teachers whose students are competing may join the jury as guest members only for the categories their students are competing in.

The points awarded by the guest members of the jury count the same as the points awarded by the other jury members.

The guest members of the jury do not have the right to rate their students. As guest members of the jury, they must listen to every performance in the category that their students are competing in.

The guest members of the jury must prepare their students before the performances so that their attention is undivided when the other contestants in the category are performing.

The guest members of the jury must check in with the Jury Secretary via email, competition@saxperience.rs so that the Jury Secretary may send them the instructions.

The Organizer will make sure that each guest member has a place among the jurors.

After all the contestants in a category have performed, the guest members of the jury must convene with the other jurors in the jury room and appraise all the performances, except that of their own students.

A score sheet, with every jury member’s scoring, will be made available to the contestants.

Each jury member must keep notes on every contestant they are appraising, should the contestant or their teacher, ask for score clarifications.

Each guest member of the jury will receive a Certificate of Participation in Jury Work.

Article 4

The jury will comprise a minimum of 3 (three) members.

In case a category has fewer than 3 (three) members in the jury, the Jury Secretary and then the Competition Director (in that order) will fill in their spots.

Article 5

Jury President:

  • Will ensure each jury member complies with the judging rules, and will interecede in case of any irregularities;
  • Determines if a contestant is meeting the program requirements for their category;
  • Confirms with his signature the final scores of all categories, including the awards.

Article 6

Jury Secretary:

  • Reviews submitted applications and ensures they comply with the Rules and Regulations;
  • Returns incomplete/incorrectly filled out applications to senders for corrections;
  • 30 (thirty) minutes before the competition, convenes with the jury and makes sure the jury is familiar with the Competition Rules and Regulations and the Judging Rules;
  • Atttends each jury session;
  • Calculates the median score for each contestant;
  • Oversees and manages performances as per the Competition Director’s instructions;
  • Announces contestants before their performances and gives the signal to start;
  • Collects the score sheets from the judges once every contestant in the category has performed;
  • Informs the organization committee of any irregularities that may arise;
  • Once all contests in a category have performed their pieces, hands off all jury records, individual score sheets signed by all jury members and calculated total points to the Organization Committee ;
  • In case the difference between the lowest and highest mark, even after discussions, is still more than 10 points, the Jury Secretary corrects the two marks until the difference is less than 10 points.

Article 7

Jury Members:

  • Grade the performances of contestants and ensembles, using a grading system where 50 points is the
  • minimum, and 100 is the maximum;
  • Fill out and sign the score sheets, and hand them over to the Jury Secretary;
  • Act on any irregularities that may arise;

The jury members cannot judge their own students or contestants they are related to. In such cases, the Jury Secretary will take their place.

Article 8

The contestants are ranked based on their scores. For each category, prizes are awarded based on contestants’ total scores.

  • First prize: 95-100 points
  • Second prize: 90-94.99 points
  • Third prize: 80-89.99 points
  • Honorable mention: 60-79.99 points

 

Article 9

The results are announced after the deliberation and once the judges have reached their final decision. The jury’s decision cannot be appealed.

Article 10

The judges may cut off contestants’ performances should the performance go over the category time limit.

Article 11

In case the audience is being disruptive, the Jury President may suggest to the Organizer to continue the competition without an audience, but it is up to the Organizer to make the final decision.

Article 12

The final results are officially announced by the Jury Secretary and then are posted by the Organizer at www.saxperience.rs by 8 p.m. on the same day.

All concerns, suggestions, and complaints when it comes to the jury and its operation, should be emailed to the organizer at competition@saxperience.rs

First category (I) for contestants born in 2015, and younger

Duration: up to 3 minutes

Program requirements:

  • Ah, Mon Beau Chateau (mandatory piece)
  • A free choice piece

Second category (II) for contestants born in 2014

Duration: up to 4 minutes

Program requirements:

  • J. Brahms - Sandman (mandatory piece)
  • A free choice piece

Third category (III) for contestants born in 2013

Duration: up to 5 minutes

Program requirements:

  • M. Perrin - Berceuse (mandatory piece)
  • A free choice piece

Fourth category (IV) for contestants born in 2012

Duration: up to 6 minutes

Program requirements:

  • M. Petrenko - Vals (mandatory piece)
  • A free choice piece

Fifth category (V) for contestants born in 2011

Duration: up to 7 minutes

Program requirements:

  • E. Bozza - Menuet des pages (mandatory piece)
  • A free choice piece

Sixth category (VI) for contestants born in 2010

Duration: up to 8 minutes

Program requirements:

  • J. Rueff - Chanson et Passepied (mandatory piece)
  • A free choice piece

Seventh category (VII) - for contestants born in 2009

Duration: up to 8 minutes

Program requirements:

  • M. Perrin - Fantasie Tzigane (mandatory piece)
  • A free choice piece

Eighth category (VIII) - for contestants born in 2008

Duration: up to 10 minutes

Program requirements:

  • P. Maurice - Tableaux de Provence – 1st movement (mandatory piece)
  • A free choice piece

Ninth category (IX) - for contestants born in 2007

Duration: up to 12 minutes

Program requirements:

  • D. Milhaud - Scaramouche – 1st movement (mandatory piece)
  • A free choice piece

Tenth category (X) - for contestants born in 2006

Duration: up to 15 minutes

Program requirements:

  • A. Glazounov - Saxophone Concerto Op. 109 – to the end of the cadenza (mandatory piece)
  • A free choice piece or A. Glazounov - Saxophone Concerto Op. 109 – after the cadenza to the end of concert

Eleventh category (XI) - for contestants born in 2004 and 2005

Duration: up to 15 minutes

Program requirements:

  • A. Sedlar - Tudor Etudes, Etude No. 1 (mandatory piece)
  • A free choice piece

Twelfth category (XII) - for contestants born in 2002 and 2003

Duration: up to 15 minutes

Program requirements:

  • J. Ibert, Concertino da camera – 1st movement (mandatory piece)
  • A free choice piece

Thirteenth category (XIII) - for contestants born in 2001, and older

Duration: up to 15 minutes

Program requirements:

  • I. Jevtic, Concert – 1st movement (mandatory piece)
  • A free choice piece

Awards:

First award: 95-100 points

Second award: 90-94.99 points

Third award: 80-89.99 points

Honorable mention: 60-79.99

PRIZE FUND

The winner of each category, if he/she had been given 95 points or more, will be awarded a cash prize in the amount of:

  • Winner of the 1st category - 80 euros
  • Winner of the 2nd category - 80 euros
  • Winner of the 3rd category - 80 euros
  • Winner of the 4th category - 90 euros
  • Winner of the 5th category - 90 euros
  • Winner of the 6th category - 90 euros
  • Winner of the 7th category - 100 euros
  • Winner of the 8th category - 100 euros
  • Winner of the 9th category - 100 euros
  • Winner of the 10th category - 100 euros
  • Winner of the 11th category - 130 euros
  • Winner of the 12th category - 130 euros
  • Winner of the 13th category - 200 euros

In addition to the mentioned cash prizes, the jury will award the best competitors with saxophone products from the range of well-known manufacturers such as Vandoren, Selmer and Krpitza Tegich.

The best-placed competitor in the thirteenth category, if he wins 100 points, the Organizer guarantees a performance at the Belgrade Saxperience festival in the following calendar year.

Application fees:

  • For the first, second and third categories: 40 euros
  • For the fourth, fifth and sixth categories: 50 euros
  • For the seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth categories: 60 euros
  • For the eleventh and twelfth: 80 euros
  • For the thirteenth category: 100 euros

Important notes:

  • The competitors must play mandatory pieces from memory. The rest of the program can be played using music sheets.
  • Students of music high schools may not compete in the same categories as the students attending elementary music schools. If they happen to fall, age-wise, under the same category, the high school student must compete in the first next category, no matter what year he or she was born in.
  • Likewise, professional musicians may not compete in the same category as students of music high schools. If they happen to fall, age-wise, under the same category, the professional musician must compete in the first next category, no matter what year he or she was born in.
  • For the free choice piece, it is advisable to play classical saxophone compositions rather than jazz pieces.
